Females born before April 1 of 1966 can receive part of Japanese pension before age 65

It is the basic rule that you can receive Japanese old age pension from the date of birth at age 65.
However, females born before April 1 of 1966 can receive part of their Kosei Nenkin (employees’ pension insurance) under a special rule, if they have a record of being employed and paying Kosei Nenkin.
The following table shows the ages to receive (part of) pension for females, under age 65 as of July 2022.

Date of Birth Age to start receiving pension (Female, part of full pension)
From April 2 of 1954 to April 1 of 1958 Age 60 (from the date of birth)
From April 2 of 1958 to April 1 of 1960 Age 61 (from the date of birth)
From April 2 of 1960 to April 1 of 1962 Age 62 (from the date of birth)
From April 2 of 1962 to April 1 of 1964 Age 63 (from the date of birth)
From April 2 of 1964 to April 1 of 1966 Age 64 (from the date of birth)

With receiving this special payment you don’t have any disadvantages to receive your old age pension after age 65. You will be able to receive a full-fledged pension after age 65.

Males born before April 1 of 1961 can receive part of Japanese pension before age 65

Males born before April 1 of 1966 also can receive part of their Kosei Nenkin (employees’ pension insurance) under a special rule, if they have a record of being employed and paying Kosei Nenkin.
The following table shows the ages to receive (part of) pension for males, under age 65 as of July 2022.

Date of Birth Age to start receiving pension (Male, part of full pension)
From April 2 of 1957 to April 1 of 1959 Age 63 (from the date of birth)
From April 2 of 1959 to April 1 of 1961 Age 64 (from the date of birth)

Like females, you don’t have any disadvantages to receive your old age pension after age 65. You will be able to receive a full-fledged pension after age 65.
This special rule is set for the purpose of giving an adjustment between the old pension system before year 1985 and the present system after year 1985. So persons whose date of births are recent and have no chance to get enrolled in the old pension system are out of this special rule.

Diminished pension can be received from before age 65 if you apply it

On the other hand all qualified persons are permitted to apply Japanese old age pension before age 65, if they agree to receive a diminished amount.

All qualified persons can apply to receive their old age pension from a designated month between age 60 and 65.
Its amount is, though, diminished according to the following formula:

Diminish rate = 0.5% or 0.4% [Note] * number of total months from the start to the date of birth at age 65

[Note] 0.5% for persons whose date of births are before April 1 of 1962 / 0.4% for persons whose date of births are after April 2 of 1962.

For example, if a qualified person whose date of birth is in July of 1962 applies to receive old age pension from January 2023 (60 years old past 6 months), then he / she will receive a pension whose amount is diminished by 21.6%.

This diminished rate has kept constant throughout your life once you apply it. So we suggest you to make a decision with enough consideration if you want to apply it.
